Who We Are
Environment New Jersey is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization. We believe there’s something special about New Jersey — something worth protecting and preserving for future generations. Whether it's relaxing at Cape May, playing Frisbee at Great Swamp, or hiking through our northern mountains, New Jersey's natural wonders enrich our lives in countless ways. Yet the places we love and the environmental values so many of us share are too often threatened by powerful industries, shortsighted politicians and more. Defending our environment requires independent research, tough-minded advocacy and spirited grassroots action.
That’s the idea behind Environment New Jersey. Together with thousands of supporters from all walks of life, we take the kind of action that wins tangible results for our environment.

What We Do
Funded by supporters like you, we research the challenges confronting New Jersey's environment and educate the public about what’s at stake. Through our research reports, news conferences, interviews with reporters, op-ed pieces, letters to the editor and more, we raise awareness of environmental issues and promote sensible solutions. Our canvassers meet people where they are — in public places or door to door — raising awareness, recruiting new supporters and activists, and raising funds to support our work.
When decisions are being made about New Jersey's environment, our elected officials hear plenty from the oil companies, developers and other powerful interests. We make the case for our environment and help people like you make your voice heard, through petitions, emails, letters, phone calls and more, all delivered to the right people just when it matters most.

Putting your support to work
- Saving Our Open Spaces. In 2012, we sought to stop a plan by Gov. Chris Christie to offer developers exemptions to environmental protections, a plan that would accelerate the loss of New Jersey's open space. After documenting the potential harm, we participated in news conferences and rallies to oppose the governor's move, helped convince the Assembly to go on on record against it, and filed a lawsuit to stop it.
- Stopping the Clean Air Rollback. In 2011 and 2012, Environment New Jersey spearheaded opposition to Gov. Christie's unilateral move to pull New Jersey out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a 10-state program that cuts harmful power plant pollution, makes polluters pay, and invests that money in clean energy. Our reports documented the program's success. Our action and advocacy convinced the Legislature to pass two bills reinstating the program. And we filed suit to stop the governor's shortsighted move.
- The Next Chapter for The Shore. With the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the fragility of the Jersey Shore became tragically apparent. As we rebuild, we are working to ensure we do so in a way that will better protect the Shore's water and natural places. The progress we made this year for the protection of the Shore can serve as a hopeful reminder that we can realize a brighter, cleaner and safer future for the Shore.
