Environment New Jersey Announces Pro-Environment Choices for 2012 Congressional Elections
For Immediate Release

Environment New Jersey announced its endorsements for the 2012 election season, shining a spotlight on key pro-environment candidates for Congress and the White House, by publicly endorsing Sen. Robert Menendez, Rep. Rush Holt, Rep. Frank Pallone, Shelley Adler and President Barack Obama.

“When it comes to the air we breathe, the water we drink and the places we love, our elections matter. There is a clear choice for voters this fall on the environment, and these candidates stand head and shoulders above their opponents. Environment New Jersey is proud to give a green-seal of approval to each of these candidates,” said Doug O’Malley, Environment New Jersey’s interim director.

Environment New Jersey endorses the following candidates for their support for protections of clean air, clean water and clean energy and protecting our precious natural open spaces:

Sen. Bob Menendez has been a fighter for New Jersey’s environment -- fighting for stronger clean air protections, and against right-wing rollbacks of our core environmental protections. He fought for legislation to end subsidies to Big Oil, to create more clean energy jobs, and stood up to the polluters who want to weaken the EPA. The choice between Sen. Menendez and State Senator Joe Kyrillos is a no-brainer – Environment New Jersey is proud to stand behind Sen. Menendez’s environmental record and endorse his re-election.

Shelley Adler understands and values our clean air and clean water protections – as opposed to gutting them. The choice between Shelley Adler and Rep. Jon Runyan is a night and day difference. Runyan wants to turn the lights out on our environment and Shelley wants to turn the spotlight on Tea Party environmental attacks to fight them back. She will be a strong voice for New Jersey’s environment if elected to Congress, and Environment New Jersey urges voter support for Shelley Adler.

Rep. Rush Holt has been a leader to promote clean energy in the House, and has stood up for the environment state-wide. From saving the Delaware Water Gap to protecting the Jersey Shore, the Congressman has been an undaunted advocate for our natural environment. And he has led the charge to promote clean energy to battle climate change. His environmental record is sterling, and Environment New Jersey is proud to endorse Rep. Holt.

Rep. Frank Pallone has been a champion for New Jersey’s environment, leading the charge to protect the Jersey Shore from off-shore drilling. In addition to a strong voting record on the environment, Rep. Pallone has consistently stood up to the recent Tea Party rollbacks of core environmental protections, from the Clean Air Act to clean cars. Rep. Pallone has more than earned the support of Environment New Jersey for re-election.

President Barack Obama:  President Obama has aggressively protected our families’ health by tackling pollution that threatens the quality of our air and our water. He has advanced policies to dramatically reduce our dependence on oil and has doubled the nation’s reliance on clean renewable energy.  To move America toward a clean energy future, to protect our environment and health, and to ensure the U.S. does our part to combat global warming, President Barack Obama gets Environment New Jersey’s enthusiastic support.

“With the polluter lobby spending insane amounts of campaign cash on this election, it is more important than ever that New Jersey voters support those candidates who share our environmental values and who will protect our air, our water, our special places and our families’ health,” said O’Malley.  “On November 6, the choice for New Jerseyans and the planet is clear. We believe all five of our endorsed candidates deserve to be elected."
