Open Space

Tell Gov. Corzine to stop the developers' bill!

Gov. Jon Corzine has been a champion for open space protections.

Now, less than two weeks before he leaves office, he has the chance to secure his legacy: by vetoing the developers' bill, which would roll back protections for hundreds of thousands of acres of valuable open space -- protections that he passed in 2007.

Sign our petition to urge Gov. Corzine to veto the developers' bill, and leave a legacy of open space protection, clean water and smart growth.

Dear Governor Corzine:

I am writing to thank you for your past efforts to protect New Jersey's most valuable open space, and to urge you to veto S2985/A4345 and S3137/A4347 should they reach your desk in the coming week.

These bills would undo the adoption of the updated Water Quality Management Planning Rules, which you championed in 2007, and open up lands which you protected from damaging, high density development.

As you know, protecting these environmentally sensitive lands is job #1 in the smart growth playbook. If the legislature is allowed to open these very special lands to development, smart growth in New Jersey is just a pipe dream that we cannot hope to achieve.

New Jersey already loses too much environmentally sensitive open space. Nearly half of the lands we lose are wetlands and forests, according to Rutgers University.

Please stand up and preserve the protections you put in place in 2007. And thank you for leaving New Jersey a legacy of clean water, smart growth and natural beauty.

Sincerely,
